Content and Ads in Sports Illustrated and GameInformer

The two magazine I’ve examined are Sports Illustrated and GameInformer. Both magazine feature a plethora of ads from new television show to car brands as many magazines do. However, Sports Illustrated featured ads for sports related products such as Under Armor clothing and Adidas shoes while GameInformer featured ads that related to the world of video games and technology as well as other products associated with the demographic. GameInformer had ads for new video games, desktop computers/laptops and superhero TV shows unlike in the Sports Illustrated magazine. The stories in SI focused on sports of course from the MLB playoffs about to start to the new NFL season while GameInformer focused on a highly-anticipated video game coming out next month, “Middle Earth: Shadow of War”. Both featured pictures in their editorials but SI has real pictures taken from the field while GameInformer featured photos taken from the gameplay of a video game along with a few real-life photos of deve...

Foreign representation in "Logan" and "Wonder Woman"

American films do not always properly represent or cast foreign roles but improvements have certainly been made in the industry regarding foreign representation. One of my favorite films this year, Logan, is set in the United States for the most part, however, the first act is set by the Mexican-United States border which does feature Latino actors. These actors portray members of a gang who are trying to vandalize the main character’s, Logan/Wolverine, car which leads to an action sequence of Logan taking out each gang member. Having a Latino actors play gangbangers may seem stereotypical, especially on paper, but that was not the case in this film. Logan is a grim film set in a dystopian-like world so this opening scene is used to establish the film’s tone; the filmmakers just happened to decide that Mexican gang members would fit the situation better as the setting is the Mexican border. This is not the only foreign representation in the film as one of the supporting characters is ...

Local Radio in the Greater Cincinnati area

I come from a small town in Northern Kentucky, Union, which is just south of Cincinnati which is where most of our local radio stations come from. The three FM stations I listened to the most were 92.5 WOFX- classic rock, 90.9 WGUC- classical music and my personal favorite, 103.5 WGRR- classic rock and greatest hits of Cincinnati. 90.9 is owned by Cincinnati Public Radio, Incorporated, 92.5 and 103.5 are both owned by Cumulus Media which owns many various radio stations around the country. 103.5 WGRR’s ratings are 8.7 which currently lands in second place behind WLW-AM, a popular talk radio station that covers the news and local sports, in the latest Cincinnati Nielsen radio ratings. 92.5 WOFX’s ratings is are at a steady 5.5 which lands the station at 5 th place in the same Nielsen ratings and 90.0 WGUC’s rating are way down, despite having a recent increase, at a 1.9 which equates to the seventeenth spot in the Nielsen ratings. Three stations attract most of the ratings in the ma...

iParticipate three

I'm from Boone County which is just south of Cincinnati so the local newspaper was and still is the Cincinnati Enquirer which covers the daily news of Northern Kentucky as well as the city across the river. The Enquirer  began in 1841 and is the last remaining newspaper in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky which is mainly due to it having the highest circulation of any print publication in the area. The advertisers flock to the Enquirer as it is the only valuable newspaper left to place ads in that readers might actually acknowledge. You can walk into nearly any restaurant or sit at any bus station in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are and you will find a stack of the Enquirer waiting to be picked up but unfortunately these papers don't get picked as much as they once were. The Enquirer lasting as long as it has is certainly due to its transition to the online world. Readers can get the scoop on all of their local news on Cincinnati.com where an online ve...
